Why I Got a DEXA Scan (and Why You Might Want to, Too!)

If you know me, you know I’m pretty passionate about health, strength, and movement — and lately, I’ve been thinking even more seriously about the long game: how to stay strong, energised, and independent as I get older.

Recently, I decided to get a DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry for the science buffs out there) to get a clear picture of where I’m at with my muscle mass, bone density, and overall body composition. Think of it like getting a super-detailed snapshot of your body’s foundation — not just what the scales say!

Here’s why I did it: I’ve always been naturally lean (the “skinny” kid growing up, anyone else?) and while that may sound great to some, it also means I have to be really intentional about building and maintaining muscle. As we age, we naturally lose muscle mass and bone density — and that’s exactly what can lead to weakness, falls, and osteoporosis down the track. Not the future I'm aiming for!

By getting a DEXA scan now, I have solid metrics to work from. I have detailed information relating to my bone density in each limb/area of my body plus muscle and fat ratio's. It's like setting a baseline — so I can track my progress and make sure I’m putting in the right kind of work to stay strong, support my bones, and future-proof my body.

Honestly, part of what inspired me to take this extra step is you — my clients. I see how dedicated you are to your own health journeys, how much effort you put into showing up, moving well, and investing in your wellbeing. You push me to be better, to keep learning, and to lead by example. So thank you for that — you’re amazing!

I’ll be sharing more soon about what I’m focusing on from here (hello, strength training, more protein & smart nutrition!). But for now, if you’ve ever wondered whether a DEXA scan is worth it, or how you can take action to stay strong as you age, I highly recommend starting with good data. Knowledge really is power.

Here’s to getting stronger — for today, for tomorrow, and for years to come. 💪🏼
