Mothers Day Edition

I got it from my Mumma - Things I learnt from my Mum

As we head into Mother's Day weekend, I have been reflecting on the things my own Mum has taught me, that has shaped the woman I am today. From basic life lessons to things I'll never forget.

1) Unrelenting Perseverance

From a young age, Mum never let us quit the hard stuff. Whether it was a musical instrument, a sports team or a new job that we’d committed to that hadn’t quite been what we’d expected. Mum taught us to value our commitments and work through the uncomfortable stuff head on.

It was the school holidays halfway through senior year when Mum sent me to Brisbane to do a week of work experience with my sister in the City. I remember calling her 3 days later, crying in a filing room of a Law Firm because I hated it so much.

My friends were back home on the Sunshine Coast going to parties and spending their days by the beach & I was facing cold early mornings, long commutes to the city & DULL work. Mum held firm and encouraged me to honour the commitment I had made. So, I stuck it out.

That was 20 years ago and that experience still sticks in my mind as one of life’s great lessons that sometimes life is hard, and things in life are hard. Mum taught us that we can do the hard things. The hard, messy, uncomfortable stuff is where we grow.

Because of Mum, I am resilient, determined, courageous & committed. Thank you Mum!

2) A love of music

If you know me, you know how much I love music. Creating new playlists is one of my favourite things to do! I love almost every genre, across every era. I love the way music can transport me back to a specific memory, have me crying one minute and jumping for joy the next.

You can thank my Mum for my eclectic taste in music. Growing up it was an endless music fest at home with records continually playing that ranged anywhere from Phantom of the Opera to Led Zeppelin.

Mum is the life of the party. She knows how to have fun, laugh & shake her tail-feather.

Because of Mum, I love music, fun & know how to party. Thanks Mum!

3) Desire Knowledge

Mum is a wealth of knowledge. She loves to learn and no matter the season she’s in, you’ll always find her reading, researching or taking a class. She’s studied Numbers, Science, History, Naturopathy, Nutrition & now she’s adding Dance to her skillset!

Her thirst for knowledge has taught me that it’s never too late to learn something new. Age is just a number and if you have a passion for something, it’s your job to share that passion & knowledge with the world.

I could go on but I am going to finish with the biggest & most impactful thing my Mum has encouraged me to do. And that is to get out of my comfort zone. Because of Mum, I have the boldness & courage to take on the scary things in life. From speaking in-front of crowds, moving cities, travelling countries alone & now stepping out of the comfort of a safe job and starting my own business.

Mum has taught me that its better to get out and do the things you want to do, no matter how scary. Even if you fail, at least you’ll have tried and at least you’ll have done something extraordinary in the process.

So to my Mumma, I say thank you! Thank you for blessing us with your courage, grit & zest for life. Your legacy carries on in your 4 (awesome) kids and now 10 Grandkids!

Happy Mothers Day Mum.

Love Dani x
